How to Repair Sheetrock Walls

A damaged sheetrock wall does not need guesswork. The repair depends on the size of the damage, the condition of the drywall around it, and how smooth you want the wall to look after paint.

How to Repair Sheetrock Walls

Most people panic when they see a `, but it’s just paper and gypsum. You don't need a contractor to fix it. Start by identifying how much damage you're actually looking at. A small nail hole requires a different approach than the crater your teenager left when they slammed the door.

For tiny dings and nail pops, use a lightweight spackle. Swipe it over the hole with a putty knife and let it dry. Don't overthink the application because you're going to sand it anyway. Once it’s hard, hit it with a fine sanding sponge until it feels flush with the wall.

Dealing with Real Damage

When the hole is bigger than a coin, spackle won't cut it. You need structure. Buy a self-adhesive mesh patch from the hardware store. Stick it over the hole and cover it with a thin layer of joint compound. Use a wider knife this time to feather the edges out so you don't end up with a visible hump on your wall.

If someone put a foot through the wall, you'll need to cut out a square of the damaged area. Screw a small piece of wood behind the hole to act as a brace. Then, cut a new piece of sheetrock to fit the gap and screw it into the wood. Tape the seams and apply three thin coats of mud. Sanding between coats is annoying but necessary if you want the repair to disappear.

Texture is the part everyone messes up. If your walls are smooth, you're lucky. If they have a knockdown or orange peel finish, buy a spray can of texture and practice on a piece of cardboard first. Match the pattern before you spray the actual wall. Prime the patch before you paint it or the repair will soak up the color and look different than the rest of the room.
