Popcorn Ceiling Repair in Western Massachusetts

Nobody likes a ceiling that looks like a cottage cheese accident from 1978. If you live in the Pioneer Valley, you likely have at least one room where the popcorn ceiling is starting to flake. Usually bathrooms are first to fail. These ceilings were popular because they were cheap to install and hide flaws, but they've become a outdated and a magnet for dust and cobwebs.

The Problem With Patching Popcorn Texture

Most homeowners try to fix a water stain or a crack with a can of spray texture from a hardware store. It usually ends up looking like a bright white blotch on a beige background or road salt glued to the ceiling. Matching texture is a skill that takes years to learn and DIY attempts never look good.

This matters because a bad patch job is often more distracting than the original damage. You want the repair to be invisible. Achieving that requires more than just a spray can and a prayer.

Why Popcorn Ceilings Need a Professional

Our local weather in the Pioneer Valley is brutal on old building materials. The humidity in July and the dry heat in January cause the drywall underneath to expand and contract. Over time, this makes the old adhesive in the popcorn ceiling texture to fail. In bathrooms the humidity can cause the texture to peel and fall off the ceiling.

When we handle a repair in Amherst or Northampton, we don't just spray over the problem. We look at the root cause:

  • We check for moisture issues that might be causing the peel

  • We scrape back the loose material to find a solid base

  • We use a professional-grade hopper and air compressor to match the existing spray pattern. We were still spraying popcorn on new homes in 2002-2005. This experience allows us to repair the texture the same way it was applied when the house was built.

  • We prime and paint the whole popcorn ceiling so the repair blends in and disappears.

We Mask Before Spraying Popcorn Ceilings

Popcorn texture repair is a nightmare to do yourself. It is the kind of job that makes you want to sell the house rather than pick up a putty knife. The dust gets into everything and the "snow" from the ceiling can get everywhere.

At MrWalls, we spend more time on containment and masking than we do actual spraying the texture. We cover every inch of your floor, walls, and furniture with plastic and drop cloths. Once we finish, the only sign we were there is a ceiling that actually looks flat and clean like the day it was built.

Stop staring at that water spot in your living room or the crack in the hallway. If you need a hand with your ceilings, give us a call. We'll give you an honest quote and answer on whether it can be repaired or if it’s finally time to scrape it all off and go smooth.

Asbestos Warning For Pre 1980 Popcorn Ceilings

If your home was built before 1980, and has popcorn ceiling texture this is important. Popcorn Texture also known as acoustic ceiling texture made before 1980 may contain asbestos. Never disturb popcorn texture that was applied before 1980 unless you have it tested for asbestos. When working on homes built before 1980 we are not able to remove the texture without testing it. Our solution is to laminate over it with drywall or if it is well sealed with paint, skim coat it smooth. MrWalls Drywall & Painting (413)302-0640
